Historical Context
This issue of bullying has been hard to define when it has actually started. Bullying is not something that was created by someone during the year 2000. Bullying has been out there for decades and has been a major problem yet some people don’t know that. The reason for that is because they don’t have the technology that we have in this time period. Bullying has been out there since the 18th century and it hasn’t really changed as much. “What may be seen as violent behavior today might not have been in that time. While bullying in schools remains a critical issue, throughout the years several events and studies have taken place that have made a significant impact on bullying and have expanded its meaning in many ways.”(Bullying.). So bullying is not going to stay the same. Its going to change as the time period passes and as it does bullying is going to get worse and more people are going to get highly affected it.
During this time period if there is any dramatic bullying people will know and find out much quicker than they would in the 18th century. In the past they had to wait more than 20 years just to get a story of bullying out to the media. In 1862, after almost seventy-two years of publications the daily newspaper, The Times wrote their first story on bullying when they reported a soldier allegedly died due to bullying (Koo, 2007, p109). It must have been horrible to live in this time period because it may be to late for the kids to get help from others if they are in need of help. Sometimes this bullying will lead to suicide.
Now bulling was not only seen as a bad issue that led to suicides. According to Carpenter ("Dealing with Bullies"), all of the bulling gave some of those kids strength to actually do something about the bullying and the harassment they were giving them. Those made them stronger and made them stand up for themselves .
Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online. 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once. Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly, making it the most common medium for cyber bullying. Bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide.
